Nursing has emerged as a highly important profession with the development of healthcare industries across the globe. While it has been a noble and respectable career choice throughout history, usually students who wish to make a career in the medical field, tend to see nursing as a secondary choice after medicine.
However, with increasing emphasis on medical doctors being more and more specialized, it has now become more difficult, time-consuming and expensive to start practicing medicine. A bachelor’s degree in Medicine (MBBS) is not enough any longer. A medical aspirant must also prepare for a master’s degree in medicine (MD), in order to have a successful career as a practicing doctor. It can take up to 10-12 years of study, before becoming a practicing doctor. Furthermore, getting into an MBBS Program is a highly competitive process anywhere in the world, MD being even more competitive, and highly expensive too in terms of tuition fees.
With nursing on the other hand, it is possible to start earning much earlier. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be 15% employment growth for graduates of this line between 2016 and 2026. Graduates can pursue several career paths, including ICU Nurse, emergency room nurse, operating room nurse, as well as charge nurse and registered nurse supervisor. Students can also continue their higher education and pursue a Master of Science in Nursing, which allows them to pursue careers like nurse practitioner, nursing manager, advanced practice nurse and chief nursing officer.
Nursing has emerged as a popular alternative career path for students looking to enter the health sector.
