South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa Invited as Chief Guest for India’s Republic Day.

South Africa and other African nations including Ghana, Nigeria and Malawi have had a long history with India. What truly ties us together as people is that we have a shared history of facing Colonial Rule and Slavery from the British. India got independence from the British in 1947. And a key figure who contributed to our freedom was Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi, however was not just an important person to India’s Freedom Struggle, but also was an influential figure for South Africa’s workers’ rights and the nation’s fight against Colonial Racism.

Gandhi fought for the Civil Rights of non-white South Africans and his ideas of non-violent resistance and civil disobedience were a huge inspiration for Nelson Mandela.

When Madiba was awarded the Nobel prize for peace in 1994, he claimed that he owed his success to Mahatma Gandhi.

The inspiration that the anti-apartheid leader drew from the political struggles of Gandhi has been widely acclaimed. Deeply inspired by Gandhi’s philosophy of ‘satya’ (truth) and ‘ahimsa’ (non-violence), Mandela often referred to the Mahatma as his ‘role model’.

“India is the Mahatma’s country of birth; South Africa his country of adoption.”

Nelson Mandela

Gandhi was an influential figure to India’s and South Africa’s histories in their struggle towards freedom. On the 150th Anniversary of his birthday, it was only fitting that South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa was invited to be the Chief Guest of India’s Republic Day Parade (a Celebration of India’s true declaration of independence when the Indian Constitution became the country’s governing document). India’s strong ties with South Africa have always been integral in our collective efforts towards development and a new age of prosperity and growth.

Both the nations have now come a long way in terms of economic development and growth.
