Born in South Africa in 1931, Desmond Tutu received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his role in the opposition to apartheid in South Africa.Tutu always wanted a medical career but he was unable to afford a career in that field and instead became a school teacher in 1955. Tutu always wanted quality education because he knew a great education was necessary to change the world. In 1966 he did his M.A. from King’s College London.
Later, in 1978, Tutu accepted an appointment as the general secretary of the South African Council of Churches and became a leading spokesperson for the rights of black South Africans. He served for many posts like General Secretary of South African Council of Churches, Dean of Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Johannesburg, and Bishop of Lesotho. He is recognized for his lifelong commitment to “speaking truth to power”. He developed earned recognition and respect across the world through his work and his emphasis on accessibility to education.
Proper education helped Tutu to maintain the personal and social standards in his daily life and helped him create a major impact on society. Desmond Tutu always said “Universal Education is not only a moral imperative but an economic necessity, to pave the way toward making many more nations self-sufficient and self-sustaining”
